Chemistry Testing


The opening of our new, accredited chemistry laboratory in 2013 in Midrand was in response to ongoing market demands for Mérieux NutriSciences to broaden our scope in South Africa and become a one-stop service provider to industry. Our service offering has been custom built with help from Mérieux NutriSciences Global and is aligned to the testing requirements of the South African Labelling Regulations. The turnaround time for results for the above analyses will be 10 – 15 business days. We will continue to ship samples to our laboratories in Europe where analyses, methods and product matrices are not included in the above offering.

Nutritional Labelling Tests

Nutritional labelling tests are necessary according to the regulations relating to the advertising and labelling of foodstuffs (R146 of 1 March 2010). This regulation stipulates that it is mandatory to add a table containing the typical nutritional information for the product, if one or more claims (e.g. “low fat”) are made.

According to R146 the mandatory nutritional information should be determined through chemical analysis in a reputable laboratory utilising SANAS or ILAC accredited methods.

As per R146, there are eight compulsory nutritional parameters:

  • Energy
  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates by difference/ Glycaemic carbohydrates
  • Total fat
  • Saturated fat (fatty acid profile)
  • Total sugar
  • Dietary fibre
  • Total sodium

Vitamin Testing

We offer tests on a wide range of vitamins ‒ these are necessary before any claims can be made.

Our vitamin tests are accredited and are subcontracted to our network of laboratories in Europe.

Testing takes approximately 12 days.

These tests are subcontracted to our Centres of Excellence in Europe and take approximately 12 days.

Allergen Testing

In terms of labelling requirements, it is important that an allergen management programme is in place. The methodology used includes ELISA and PCR and is qualitative and quantitative. Our testing is accredited and is subcontracted to our laboratories in Europe. It takes approximately 12 days.

It is a basic requirement that food, pet food and feeding material be tested for aflatoxins. Regulations for Mycotoxins in South Africa:

The following aflatoxins are tested locally in Midrand:

  • Aflatoxin B1,B2, G1 and G2 on nut and nut products, fruit and fruit products

Various other mycotoxins can be tested by our network of laboratories in Europe and include the following:

  • Zearalonone
  • Ochratoxin A
  • Trichothecenes
  • Fumonisins
  • Deoxynivalenol (DON)


A contaminant may be defined as “any biological or chemical agent, foreign matter, or other substances that may compromise food safety or suitability".

It may be pesticides, illegal colourants, dioxins and/or chemical components that pose a risk to food safety.

Sample Collection

Mérieux NutriSciences has a fleet of highly efficient drivers who will collect samples or deliver sterile sample containers to your premises in the greater Cape Town and Midrand areas. Sample collections from clients beyond these areas are maintained through door-to-door couriers.

Our drivers have been trained in sample handling procedures to ensure that samples arrive at the laboratory timeously and at the right temperature. Each car is fitted with a built-in fridge to ensure sample integrity during transport.

Sample Submission

Samples can be submitted during business hours (08h00 to 16h30) during the week or on Saturdays (by prior arrangement). All new/dormant clients should open an account before submitting samples to the laboratory.
